Actuarial Exemptions or a Reputed College – What Should You Prioritise?

This is a genuine dilemma many actuarial aspirants face today.

You’ve been offered a seat at a lesser-known college that provides exemptions (accreditation) from a few actuarial exams. Tempting, right?

But then there’s another option — a top-ranked college, known for its academic rigour, expert faculty, brilliant peer group, and solid career opportunities — though it doesn't offer direct exemptions.

My honest take? Go with the college.

Exemptions might save you time by covering a few exams early. But a reputed college gives you something much more long-lasting:

  • A credible brand name that adds weight to your profile for life
  • Mentorship from faculty who go beyond just teaching
  • A strong peer network that can shape your professional growth
  • Career exposure to industries like consulting, analytics, and finance
  • The flexibility to pivot if you ever decide actuarial isn’t your path

Here’s the risk of chasing exemptions blindly:

If the teaching isn’t strong, if placements are weak, or if you later realise the actuarial path isn't for you... you might find yourself cornered with limited options.

A well-rounded education from a reputed institution opens doors far beyond just actuarial science. It equips you with critical thinking, industry insights, and a professional foundation that stands strong in any field — be it actuarial, finance, analytics, or something else entirely.

Exemptions should be the cherry on the cake. Not the cake itself.

Still unsure? Ask yourself this:

“Will this college and course still help me succeed even if I decide not to become an actuary?”

The answer to that question will tell you everything you need to know.
